July – Week 1

“Jack of all trades, master of none,
Often times better than a master of one.”
– Popular saying

This week I started to go off on a tangent (one of the dangers of self-learning!), well I started having many illustrious thoughts about PHP (which is unusual considering all the hate it gets). Job searches will prove it’s still an in-demand skill and many common frameworks are built on it (inc. WordPress), so I wanted to see if I could get down in the foundations of it.

Tuts+ assignment 6 suggests creating a CRUD (create, read, update and delete) application so let’s start there, you could also check out Jeffery Way’s tutorial series (it’s premium though I’m afraid). I followed this tutorial and downloaded the IDE ‘Netbeans’ from the same site. If your going to copy and paste the chunks of code, which is forgivable, but only if your leaving comments (in your own words) as you go along, taking shots as to what you think is going on.

Some of you may wish to avoid this and simply concentrate on JavaScript which is fine, trying to learn multiple languages isn’t the smartest way to go about things. But if you’re brave, then you might try to integrate the CRUD app with the current version of your dynamic quiz from Richard’s blog.

1. Get setup with NetBeans and follow this tutorial to create a CRUD app.
