July – Week 2

“PHP is a minor evil perpetrated and created by incompetent amateurs, whereas Perl is a great and insidious evil perpetrated by skilled but perverted professionals.”
– Jon Ribbens

We’re back on the PHP party boat, everyone’s gone home, you’re out of booze and you have the faint sensation your CRUD app from last week still makes no sense to you. Dark times indeed. But huzzah, a lifeboat arrives in the form of PHPacademy , and what’s this? A 23 video playlist for free! I rate this channel quite highly, I like Alex (I think that’s his name), he’s pretty concise and discusses what he’s doing and why. He’ll also talk about OOP (object orientated programming), which is a core modern programming concept (I think? I just made that up) and you’ll need to know it, among the 1000’s of other things I keep telling you that you need to know.

PHPacademy’s channel is full of videos, overflowing you might say – though avoid anything he posted 2-3 years ago (2011-12) or prior to this. They’re using an older version of PHP and I had some trouble here, like realising I’d walked into the ladies restroom, I quickly backtracked and found that the newer playlists conform to more modern PHP. (Check the youtube commments, you can often tell if the code is outdated by all of the wailing lost souls trying to cling to their broken programs.) Also I’d be in trouble if I didn’t direct you to ‘PHP – The right way.’ There’s many directions you can take PHP, I’m certainly keen to learn more, however for now at least, I’ll be returning to JavaScript.

TL;DR –
1. Check out PHPacademy’s playlist and continue your foray into the world of PHP.
